The band is busy getting set up in the garage when I arrive.

“Hey,” Len says. The others greet me too but Mac just sends a gruff nod in my direction.

His mood improves once the rehearsal gets underway. “Hey, kid, you’ve been practising.”

“Thought I needed to, after making a fool of myself the last day.”

“You weren’t that bad.” From Mac that’s a massive compliment and I feel my face glow bright red.

Afterwards he calls Pete, the bass guitarist over, and the pair of them go through a few of the trickier chords with me. After a while Pete gives Mac a satisfied nod. “He’s doing good, picks it up fast.”

“Can you come again, if we need you?” Mac asks.

“Of course, be glad to.” I write down my home and work numbers on a scrap of paper and hand it to him.

“Okay,” he sticks the paper to the wall with a piece of gum. “We’ll be in touch.”

I drive out of there light as air, unable to believe my luck. A whole new vista is opening up in front of me. The band wants me to play with them. Sure, it’s only rehearsals but, as Mam always says, one thing leads to another. Perhaps one day, if they are really stuck, I might even land a gig.
